Whyhockey’s April-May 2017 Prospect Rankings

It has been a while since we put out a prospect ranking–just over two months. With ‘home teams’ Florida Panthers and Philadelphia Flyers golfing, we had extra time to catch up and make our adjustments.

There is very little consensus in this draft. By now, there is even some second guessing on the first overall pick. Nolan Patrick can’t seem to stay healthy, and while his numbers on the ice make him #1 overall caliber, Nico Hischier has been healthy and electric all year. Based on team need or preference, Hischier could go first. In fact, for the first time this year, Patrick isn’t the #1 on our list.

Last rankings we included an NHLe column. This post we wanted to highlight the areas where consensus exists and does not exist between Matthew O’Brien and myself. The next ranking we post will be our ‘”guide,” so this is the last opportunity to submit individual rankings before we get to a singular final ranking.

To keep the table simple, we opted against a tiering column. Had we included Tiers they’d look like this:

Tier 1 – Probable Top Line/Pairing Players : #1-5

Tier 2 – Possible Top Line/Pairing Players : #6-16

Tier 3 – Possible Top 6/ Top 4 Players : #17-31

Tier 4 – High Risk, High Reward Top 6 Players : #32-45

Tier 5 – Potential NHLers : #46-62

There is wiggle room to the tier ranges, and there is even less degree of separation between the tiers or players within the tiers relative to most years. However, like most years the tiers start to get bigger and less accurate as it gets deeper into the draft.

The below table includes the top 62 prospects on both Matthew’s list and my own. For prospects who were not included in one of our lists, they are given “63 N/A” tags to keep the table sorting in sync.
